Drown by Junot Daz

The main characters idea of masculinity is something he struggles with daily, with having no positive influences to show him exactly what a man is, he continues to fight with himself over whether he is truly a man or not.
Daz shows us that women are inferior and completely hopeless in this world. The main characters idea about women are not very positive or concrete. He has witness several different women portrayed in the same light; small, desperate, and dependent. The recruiter that approaches him doesnt help his outlook on women, when he brags about his wife being just another possession while having pictures of prostitutes on his cellphone (100). In fact, while swimming at the local pool one night, a guy making out with his girl watched him as though he was going to cut in, and stood before her claiming her as his property (93). After being shown that women are nothing more than a possession, he also finds women to be small and stupid, having witnesses a Skytop crew pull a bikini top from a girl stupid enough to hang out alone and taunted her with it (105). This showed the main character that the girl held no authority over the men that were teasing her.
Another situation the main character comes across where the man is an authority figure over the woman, is when his father limits his mothers spendings, by giving her an allowance of a hundred dollars only once a year (96-97). He feels that his mother is desperate and dependent on his father because he catches her time and time again on the phone with his father, who has moved on with another women (100). Not only has the author made women into inferior beings in the story but he also painted the gay community in the same light. He shows this when the main character and his friends go out to the bars and on the way home having failed at picking up any women, stop by the local gay club and points a plastic gun at them, just to see if they would run or shit their pants (103).
