According to the Declaration of Independence, "all men are created equal, they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness."" Unfortunately, some people aren't granted those rights because of immigration. Latino immigration has become one of the government's major concerns. They've tried to control it by implementing a series of laws to criminalize the immigrant's presence and deport undocumented (and at times, documented) immigrants already in the country. The measure that has been the most controversial is Arizona's Law SB 1070. While the law is said to decrease crimes, drug issues, and overpopulation, this law must be changed because the steps the government is taking are brutal, unfair, and many Hispanics are affected by it. By punishing employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants, can reduce the flood of illegal immigrants who come to the country to find work, and therefore prevent unnecessary punishment towards innocent people.
Arizona is the latest state to introduce one of the strictest policies to deport illegal immigrants and to frighten others from coming into the state. The Arizona State Legislature passed the Senate Bill 1070 (SB 1070) in April 2010 with the objective to make "attribution through enforcement, " meaning "to make day-to-day life so unbearable for undocumented immigrants that they will decide to ˜self-deport' and leave the country on their own " (Marrero 108-109). SB 1070 is unique in its choice with its assertion of various actions that targets only Latinos. This policy requires local police officers to check the immigration status of an individual during a routine stop or during any "legal contact, " if there is reasonable suspicion that the person is illegally present in the country. The law also specifies that in addition to committing a federal violation, a person is guilty of trespassing if the person is present on any public or private land and does not carry an alien registration card.
