An Oveview of A Beautiful Country - Greece

Greece is a small European country near the Mediterranean Sea. It is composed of a peninsula and the rest of it is many small islands this isolation is what helped Greece when it was developing as a country. This can be seen through most of Greece's ancient conflicts being in between its own city states. Instead of a whole country Greece became made up of city states. City states were formed because of Greece's geography which consists of many tall mountains and many islands. A city state is similar to a country in that a city state has its own laws, rules, and currency. One of the better known city states is Sparta it was a powerful militaristic city states. Sparta had its own army and it conquered other city states for power and wealth. One event Sparta is very well known for is the Battle of Thermopylae.
This document speaks to how Spartan society was structured. In Spartan society young men are taken when they are young and trained to be good in sports. Spartans were men who understood war and as such were very experienced in war. This due to their warring culture where Spartans conquered neighboring city states in order to gain wealth and power this is what gave them experience. This is what made being a good soldier one of the highest honors in Spartan culture. This experience in war is evident in this document for example when the Spartans fought the King's Immortals who were the Persians best troops and they found them to be inexperienced in combat. In fact many times during the battle Xerxes was worried for his troops. Even when the Persians found the mountain pass the Spartans stayed and fought them even though it was futile it was to make a stand against Persian.
I found this document to much easier to read than the primary document on China. This document was easier to read for me because it was written in a more familiar way at least in the way it was structured and laid out.
