Achievements of the Fort Worth Stockyards


            "Ye Ha, ride 'em cowboy!" is an exclamation of joy and praise for cowboys who have accomplished something great. Well, in 1893 Greenleaf Simpson bought the Union Stock Yards from Mike C. Hurley, the president of the stockyards, for $133,333.33 (Stockyards Museum Fort Worth, 2014) which was a tremendous amount of money at that time; so much that it was compose as the biggest deal in Fort Worth's history (Atkinson & Wood, 2010). Greenleaf Simpson's investment paid off by creating one of the most exciting, successful, and enduring stockyards in the United States. As one of the great achievement of the state of Texas, Texans should know how and why their Fort Worth Stockyards was and is such a great achievement.
             The original name, the Union Stockyards, was established by President Mike C. Hurley. Unfortunately, Hurley did not have much success with the business (Pate, 2010). He did not have enough money to buy cattle to attract local ranchers or farmers. So he decided to invite one of the wealthiest men in America, Greenleaf Simpson to invest in his stock yards. Greenleaf Simpson was a capitalist from Boston. When Simpson arrived in Fort Worth to see how the business was going, he came at the right time. Because when he arrived, Fort Worth was starting to build the railroad tracks. Seeing this, he thought the business would be a worthy investment since the railroads could more easily and economically transport the cattle to sell to the markets. Simpson renamed the Union Stockyards to Fort Worth Stockyards Company (Pate, 2010). Unfortunately, railroad transportation did not seem as great as he first thought, so he decided to attract owners of packing plants to build their plants next to the stock yards. Also initiated the workers to work on the plant and generate the tax revenue for the city. Surprisingly, the business for packing plants has been beneficial for the City. .
