Imagine yourself were serving your country, and as you died, the corpse rats would get over and eat you. That was disgusting. Moreover, the closeness between the earth and the living and dead is further explored in the grisly scene of the graveyard battle. The soldiers use the unearthed coffins of the dead in a desperate attempt to survive. The line between living and dead becomes blurred, as Paul and the others take shelter in and among the coffins. Paul described, "Two of our dead lie in the unturned graves. We merely throw the earth in on them " (AQWF-73). Lastly, those men from this war didn't inspire anybody, for the fact that they look like they cannot stand one day on the front and for the fact that they sacrificed themselves just being eaten later by corpse rats. That is no heroic in it. That is not inspiring others to go to war. Moreover, these 17-year-old kids were having an inner crisis in them throughout the whole novel. They had no trust in the adult world. Also, those rookies were forced later to go to war, which means they had never had a single training before going to the front yet. In the movie "Men Of Purpose ", the men in war were shown differently. Those five soldiers were listed are the perfect examples of a soldier, sacrificed in glory and heroic. Although it is a much different field of war than "All Quiet On The Western Front ", it showed that no matter what war it is, you would probably still die and still receive the common phrase from the military, "Thank you for your service ".
