Research-Based Action

At a young age they are "debeaked, " in other words they get a portion of their beaks cut off by a burning hot blade to avoid them from peaking at each other. Keep in mind that these chicks have several nerves in their beaks, so when they get them cut by a hot blade it can lead to severe pain and chronic pains. They don't give the chicks any painkillers, so they have to go through the process of felling all the pain when getting debeaked. Some chicks can't survive the pain, so they would die by dehydration or because of their immune system can't fight any longer to keep them alive. .
After the process of separating the chicks and debeaking them, they are moved to battered cages. These cages are bad for hens to live in. There isn't space to move around or even stretch their wings since there are five to ten hens to one cage. The cage is no bigger than a Wal-Mart grocery basket that is carried by hand. The cage is tiny, measuring from eighteen to twenty inches. It is made by wire, so the hens suffer from this in many ways. They would lose feathers and suffer from bruises and abrasions just from rubbing against the cages. Their feet would become crippled from standing or walking on the wired mesh all day.
The feeding for these hens is unbelievable. They aren't fed daily or frequently. Their calcium is low seeing that they are constantly laying eggs which take a lot of calcium out of them. The hens are fed reduced-calorie feed. They are growing animals, which mean they need feed that will help them grow healthy and strong, not something that will satisfy the farmer. The hens need to be satisfied seeing that they are doing all the work. They have to suffer from fractures because their bones are weak and brittle. This causes more pain and distress to the hens. There is a process that some farms use to increase the egg laying known as "force molting. " It is a process that shocks the hens into another egg-laying cycle.
