Bartolome de Las Casas, the official protector of Indians and a man who swore his loyalty only to God and his faith; fought for the rights that every human being deserves. De Las Casas was a modern-day revolutionary; bringing the idea to the world that Indians weren't the brute and dimwitted savages that some explorers such as Columbus described them to be. Christopher Columbus, a Genoan explorer who "found " the new world and a degenerate, fought for gold and glory and his voyages and short term as governor of Cuba proved that true. His government was a tyranny paralleled only to Hitler's form of rule, killing thousands to prevent revolting and seeking only to find gold and conquer new land for the Spanish Crown. Both men are remembered for their achievements throughout their lives almost half a century later, but what some consider achievements, others consider an atrocity.
Some remember this time from old tales of the first man to "sail the ocean blue"", others remember this time by the vicious means some men went through to conquer and acquire wealth. Since the beginning of the voyage, Columbus feared mutiny because of the length of the trip, it wasn't till October 11th that he arrived on the island and breathed a sigh of relief. Columbus wrote of the beauty that was the island, with the luscious green trees and the different indigenous fish. Naturally, after taking in the sight of a beautiful uncharted island and meeting the local natives, his next main focus was to convert, command, and conquer. He took notice of the fact that he and his men were looked upon as heavenly figures and that the natives had virtually no weapons nor fighting techniques, so he knew that they could be "easily commanded or made to work ". At this point Columbus had seen the endless possibilities that lied ahead. Between different islands and tribes, he focused on discovering and exploring as much as possible, in hopes that he would find something to bring back to the Queen.
