I sit here and I scribble my thoughts down on this piece of paper (Though soon to be transcribed to a computer). Why thought? Why is it that I write? Society tells me that I should be out, engaging in benevolent activities, or spending well-earned currency on name brands and sharing my available time enforcing the pop-culture image.
I hear commercials telling me to be an individual. Telling me where to shop. Attempting to dictate what activities I take part in. How is it that they expect me to be an individual (meaning different, for those of you who shove your lives into a mainstream hole) while advertising all of this to a large group? This advertising is the ultimate oxymoron, enough to shove a free mind well over the proverbial edge.
People push these thoughts onto me. They enforce the idea of being an individual, by going to coffee houses and buying clothing from stores that consider themselves "Outfitters for Individuals", yet reside in the local known for it's lacking individuality; the mall.
But even as I sit here, scribbling my thoughts down, I find myself wearing the most mainstream items available. Old Navy, Eddie Bauer, and Tommy Hilfiger. Am I a victim? No, I am but another member of society. I feed the rich, giving them what they need no more of, and deny those who are truly needy.
It's time we evolve. It's time we separate from everything we know. As a whole, we need to separate from our possessions; from what we know. Stop attempting to be popular, and start to accept the fact that you are what you are. Become infatuated with what you were born with, not what you can buy, or have already bought. Enjoy things in their natural state; synthetic materials are for the crippled and unable.
