Ancient Egyptian Cities - Memphis and Thebes

Ancient Egypt was a very prosperous part of the world in its time. It strived to be only the best and it was. Though at one point in time there were two separate kingdoms, they were still very powerful; eventually they did come together, becoming a unified whole. A part of these powerful kingdoms included two very strong cities known as Memphis and Thebes. Though they were similar in many ways, they did have some differences. Discussing the history, location, and religion of Memphis and Thebes are just some of the ways to compare and contrast the two.Ancient Memphis has a very robust history for the most part. The city was founded by a pharaoh by the name of Menes around 300 BC and existed from the first dynasty on. Memphis was declared the capital after Menes unified Upper and Lower Egypt. It was known as the first Nome of Lower Egypt. According to the Encyclopedia of Britannica, it lasted as the capital of ancient Egypt for eight dynasties straight, until it started to lose some power, but it reached its peak of prestige during the 6th dynasty (Mertz 2). The city had a high density of workshops, factories, and warehouses for food and clothing. It thrived as the regional center of commerce, trade, and religion, making it another reason why it was a strong capital. Memphis also had many names through its history and its original Egyptian name was the White Walls, but it is more popularly known by its name given by the Greek. .
The history of Thebes was also very similar to Memphis, it just happened in a later time. Thebes was formed by a number of small villages that in time grew bigger and stronger. It was inhabited around 2130 BC, about 800 years after Memphis. It came about around the 4th dynasty and became a powerful capital, like Memphis, during the 11th and 18th dynasties. Thebes had its peak of prosperity in the 14th dynasty. It was known as the fourth upper Nome of Egypt. Many noble people lived in the city of Thebes and contained many beautiful gardens and brightly painted palaces.
