Media, such as reality TV, are basically used for amusement and relaxation. In my opinion, only when an individual is willing to have his/her life played out, reality TV shows are ethical worth watching. Besides, people can acquire knowledge through media, yet people can be influenced negatively by the violent scenery, cynical perception, etc. from media. The effect of media is whether positive or negative depends on the way we choose to use it. As far as I am concerned, media are not effectively used in the Hunger Games. In the novel, reality TV shows are like drugs, they gradually harm people, and make people cold-blooded, ruthless. Moreover, the reality TV shows even twist people's humanity. For the poor people who live in the Districts, media mean both luxury and torment, because reality TV shows only display either the death or the struggle of the tributes from their Districts. Nevertheless, the meaning of reality TV for the Capitol is totally different. Those people regard the violence in the arena as entertainment, and live vicariously through the tributes. .
The way that people in Capital use media is harmful and unethical. They consider the tributes' agony as their delight. The big fire set on purpose by the Gamemakers to conduct Katniss to an appointed area is an instance, and its the purpose is just dispelling their boredom. Just as what Colins mentioned in the book, "The audience in the Capitol will be getting bored, claiming that these Games are verging on dullness. This fire is to flush us out, to drive us together" " (Collins 173). Since the reality TV only shows slaughter, violence in the Hunger Games, and most of the tributes are forced to attend this competition, this kind of media can only bring people negative influence. Furthermore, the sponsors and game makers can vary their support and favour on the tributes according to what they see through the reality TV, and their supports determine the fate of the tributes.
