Mandatory Labeling of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)

People follow a trend and what's trending right now is GMO free. It is in the best interest of these companies to jump on the band wagon because they are here to serve the consumer and that is what the consumers want. It goes back to the theory of supply and demand. It could ramp up sales for them, bringing in more money than previously seen before. Whole foods also stated that their manufactures reported a 15 percent increase in sales of products they have labeled. This major food company provided the perfect example of who the companies can benefit from labeling their products.
The main reason that GMO's is their effectiveness in helping the farmer with his production costs. Genetically modified organisms can resist the elements and allow for a longer shelf life. This may not be so true, evidence has shown that GMO's may be costing the farmer and the government more money than it is bringing in. It is not always about cost and saving money. The government and the farmer may need to take a closer look at what goes into the mouths of consumers. You may think you're saving a buck but are you really? There have been efforts made by many to get the proper labeling added to products said to be containing GMOs. For example, labeling bills have been proposed in more than a dozen states over the last year. There has also been an appeal has been made to the Food and Drug Administration which drew in a million signatures. So far the FDA has made no decision on the matter but stating only that they are reviewing the labeling petition. There is even an iPhone app called Shop No GMO and a Facebook page called Label it Yourself in which people go around labeling products with homemade labels and posting the pictures on the page. The biggest push for proper labeling can be seen in California. This initiative known as proposition 37, if passed would be in favor of the consumer. It would be passed by popular vote and with 9 out of 10 people in favor of this initiative it has a fighting chance.
