A Life in Turmoil - The Story of an Hour


            One of the most interesting and disturbing facts about Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour," is that the main character, Mrs. Mallard, feels happiness when learning about the death of her husband. When hearing about the unexpected passing of a loved one a person's first thoughts may be overwhelming sadness, mad at the world or even complete disbelief, but happiness? Rather than feel disgust at her joy over her husband's passing, the reader empathizes with her and understands why she feels this way. Louise Mallard was unhappy in her coupling and felt released from the invisible restraints of marriage by his passing. The main characters conflicting feelings were representative of what many women of the time period were experiencing in their everyday lives. This conflict can be seen in the symbolic verbiage the author uses while painting the scene. It can also be seen in the conflicting feelings that the main character expresses. It is very clear in the basic irony of the story. This internal conflict was most likely very typical for women of this time period. When reading the story, the reader should be careful to not jump to judgment, but rather to try to relate to and understand the inner conflict being experienced by the main character. .
             While describing the scene, the narrator uses a clashing nature of verbiage which subtly mirrors the clearly outwardly expressed internal conflict by the main character. After Mrs. Mallard goes upstairs to her room, the narrator states that she sank into "a comfortable, roomy armchair," yet says that she is "pressed down by physical exhaustion that haunted her body." (Paragraph 4) When Louise looks out the window, she sees the "trees that were all aquiver with new life," then states "a peddler was crying his wares." (Chopin 496) The storyteller could have painted a gloomy scene by leaving out words such as "comfy" and "roomy," yet chose to use both positive and negative wording in their description of what Mrs.
