In the Kingdom of Big Sugar by Marie Brenner

To fight for something you believe in - is right or wrong - may not always be an easy task. "In the Kingdom of Big Sugar" relates a hard-fought American legal battle. The three main elements are Edward Tuddenham, Joseph Klock, and the government. Edward Tuddenham was a lawyer who viewed himself as "a fearless advocate for farm workers ". After graduating from Harvard Law School, he ended up going to Texas and later began working on a case that would last longer than 10 years. This case was against big sugar, specifically Alfonso "Alfy"" Fanjul and his brother Jose "Pepe" " Fanjul. Tuddenham believed that the workers were paid unfairly, given the type of work was so dangerous and brutal that no American would dare to do the job. When he talked to a few Jamaicans, whom he was representing in the big sugar case, they would tell him that they would work eight or more hours a day, but would only be paid for about four hours of work. Although he represented all of the workers, only a few stepped up and testified. The others were too frightened that they would lose their jobs and be deported back home.
As he looked deeper into the case, he realized that the workers weren't even making minimum wage, which at that time was about five dollars and thirty cents per ton of sugarcane cut. In fact, he figured out that they were making only about three dollars and seventy cents per ton. Even though Tuddenham brought in specialists to try to prove his case, the courts were still not persuaded that anything was wrong with the way the workers were paid. He then took another route to win the courts over by "fighting the sugar companies with contract law". This stated that the workers were expected to cut 8 tons of cane per day, essentially working by the hour, and should be paid accordingly. Since the workers never seen this document and no one admitted to following this standard contract, the court didn't pay attention to it.
