People are continuously educated by the media that this is the way men and women should be. Consequently, men are encouraged to develop and show off their aggressive behavior in a more obvious manner, but women are not. However, I believe women have the same potential and capability to perform aggressive behavior. The images and expectations present by the media have further became adopted to become the norm, gender role and stereotype for men and women in the society. Men and women are expected to behave according to the norm; otherwise, they will be sanctioned. For example, for men, they may be viewed as sub-standard, useless, and unreliable. For women, they may be judged as lack of discipline, lack of self-control, unattractive, as well as seen as sick and excessive aggression.
Furthermore, family plays an important role in enforcing the norm and stereotype of men and women created by the media. Boys and girls are treated differently by their family members from the day when they were born. For example, boys are taught to be strong, tough, active, as well as being encouraged not to back down in a fight, not to cry, and not to share feelings with others. On the other hand, girls are encouraged to put their priority in ensuring their appearance looks good and to take care of their husband and children. Consequently, boys growing up are not afraid of showing off their aggressive behavior in a more obvious manner. In the contrary, girls' aggressive behavior is often suppressed since they were born. However, I believe that women and men have the same potential and capability to perform aggressive behavior.
Moreover, school also plays an important role in enforcing the norm and stereotype of men and women created by the media. Male and female students are treated differently in school by the education system and teachers. For example, schools offer more support and encouragement to male students for their participation in competitive sport activities, but not for the female students.
