Chile - Land of Fresh and Delicious Food!

Tucked between the Pacific Ocean and the foreboding Andes moutnains is a narrow strip of land that measures a mere 150 miles at its widest spot. This wisp of land measures an astonishing eighteen times that in length and is home to 2650 miles of the western coastline of South America. This sliver of a country is known as Chile and due to its variety of geographical characteristics, there is an amazing diversity of products which allows the cuisine of this country to be remarkably varied. Chilean food has been influenced by the many settlers from different countries and the recipes they brought with them. They brought their own ingredients and methods of cooking which have remained in Chile. The new settlers had to revamp their recipes to use the spices and ingredients that were available to them, and created what came to be known as Chilean cuisine. The Spaniards introduced the use of beef, pork, chicken, onions, garlic, and rice to the people of Chile. Despite the name, Chile, Chilean cuisine is a combination of simple flavors without much heat. The chili pepper is not often used when cooking traditional Chilean food. Chilean food should not be confused with the spicy dishes common in Mexico and other South American countries.
Most Chilean families eat four meals a day. Breakfast is a light meal with just some toast and coffee with milk. The second meal of the day is lunch and it is also the largest meal of the day. It is usually two courses and lasts around an hour and a half. The first course of lunch is usually a salad; the ensalada chilena is a popular one. The second course will include beef or chicken and a generous serving of vegetables. Every day at 5:00pm, the people of Chile take time out for once. This is an afternoon tea served with bread and jam often accompanied by cheeses and palta or avocados. The Chileans named their tea time once, which means eleven, after the British tea time.
