Broken Heart Syndrome - A Reaction to Emotional Stress


            Broken Heart Syndrome is a temporary heart condition brought on by stressful situations. It is caused by the heart's reaction to a surge in stress hormones. Making a part of the heart to temporarily enlarge and doesn't pump correctly, while the remainder of the heart continues to function normally or with even more forceful contractions. The condition was originally called takotsubo cardiomyopathy. This was first identified by Japanese researchers in the early 1990's. They discovered in x-ray images that the left ventricle affected takes the shape of a vase-like pot that is used in Japan to trap octopuses. The first major studies in the United States were not until 2005. It was discover that more than 90 percent are post-menopausal women, possibly because lower levels of the hormone estrogen make the heart cells in some women more vulnerable to an adrenaline rush.              Causes.
             The exact cause of broken heart syndrome is unclear. It is thought a surge in stress hormones, such as adrenaline, might be temporarily damage the hearts in some people. How these hormones might hurt the heart or whether something else is responsible is not completely clear. A temporary constriction of the large and small arteries of the heart may play a role.
