" (Chapter 4 Pg. 25). But at the same time he also recognized that they shared some things in common and felt a bit of appreciation for Hassan. Unfortunately his ignorant side reigned and therefore he was afraid of others seeing him with Hassan; in particular a bullyboy named Assef who always discriminated Hassan for being a Hazara and made racist comments about him. Full of cowardliness, Amir would rather avoid being friends with Hassan and being seeing with him, rather than defending their friendship. .
Looking deeper into their relationship, I can conclude Amir has a kind of resentment towards Hassan because he is aware of Hassan's great character and courage. Hassan always stands up for both himself and Amir. Baba's admiration and love for Hassan seem to bother Amir. Always having a belief of Baba supposedly having a bigger love for Hassan and the selfishness of having all of his father's attention on him, led to a build up of insecurities inside of him. If Amir had shared the exact same feelings towards Hassan and saw him as no different than him, the relationship would have grown beautifully from the beginning to end, but as Amir's words express "I thought of the life I had lived until the winter of 1975 came along and changed everything. And made me what I am today" (Chapter 1, last sentence), meaning that if it wasn't for these awful childhood feelings and experiences, he wouldn't have learned and be the man he is today.
Since Amir's appreciation for Hassan is full of insecurities of him and those who surround him, he sometimes tests Hassan's loyalty. He finds quite hard to understand why anyone can be so devotional towards someone. In my opinion, I believe that Amir also feels deep inside that he does not deserve his loyalty. "Would you ever lie to me, Amir agha?" (Chapter 6 Ph. 54) These are the words of Hassan who has unconditional love for Amir and who also wonders if Amir shares his same feelings.
