Project Based Learning - A Better Choice

Suzie Boss, in her article "Project-Based Learning: A Short History" states "Maria Montessori, the Italian physician and child-development expert pioneered learning environments that foster capable, adaptive citizens and problem solvers." (Boss, 2011). Montessori started the use of PjBL in her first schools in Italy for disabled children but later found that all children thrive in this type of learning environment. Not only did they learn better they were also showing self-discipline. .
The Professors from Ankara University examine how project based learning is more effective than the traditional methods. They conducted a study with kindergarten students and this allowed the children to choose the method and the subject they gravitate towards while supporting their emotional development (Bicakci & Gursoy, 2010). Because of this study they found that PjBL has a longer and permanent effect due to learning by experiences. Another study to support PjBL was done at Vanderbilt University and it assessed the effects of a series of video-based adventure simulations it developed. Compared with a control group, students who used the Vanderbilt series scored higher in solving word problems and in planning (David, 2008). This shows that PjBL is very valuable for children to become better socially and better critical thinkers. .
Case studies have been conducted by many professors around the world that have shown PjBL to be an important learning process which gives better supporting evidence. Ann Epstein states in the article An Early Start on Thinking, "At any age critical thinkers plan and reflect therefore teachers just like students learn with hands on problems" (Epstein, 2008). Epstein completed a study on kindergarteners with PjBL and found that it helps with ways to teach critical thinking and encourage students to wonder and solve problems. The kids were more curious and also interacted well with one another.
