Comedian Rob Brydon - Building Rapport with His Audience

Rob Brydon, a renowned Welsh Comedian has starred in many recitals and shows including the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and his own live performances: "women's mobile phones". He has also hosted his own programme where he interviewed David Walliams. This essay will show the various techniques in his live show in 2009 set in Norwich called "Man in a Box" as well as his interview with David Walliams. In both these shows his attire is smart and casual, for example a suit with an open shirt making it very informal. Since he wears no blazer in his "Man in a Box" concert it means that the audience are able to relate to him more as they feel that they too can be comfortable and relaxed. .
Rob Brydon creates rapport with the audience in his "Man in a Box" comedy show in 2009 by being humorous and entertaining those who have paid to see it, as well as those who are watching it at home. The staging is important in creating rapport because it is an open stage with a black background and twinkling lights, which means that everyone looks at him. The pale blue coloured shirt that he wore also helps since it contrasts the dark colour of the stage making him more vivid. The stage makes him look more authoritative because he is looking down at the audience. During his interview show with David Walliams he creates rapport with those at home who watch the show on TV, David Walliams and the studio audience by entertaining through interviewing. The staging is very different from his live performance as here a coral pink coloured set is used with comfy chairs and cushions which ties in with the colour of his clothes. The comfort means that he is able to relax so that the audience can relate also as there is no tension in the atmosphere.
During his live show in 2009, Brydon immediately wins over the women's hearts by praising them after teasing them for example, "women are not so stupid" since he pauses for a minute before going on to say "you see women are cleverer" The sarcastic remark makes the men laugh as they know what is coming next.
