Hiding Evil in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Jekyll was beginning to perform behaviors as Hyde that Jekyll would normally not do. This fact scared him.
Living in a proper and strict Victorian society, Jekyll greatly fears becoming an outcast if the citizens discovered his other side. The pristine and official were ranked higher in the Victorian era. Failing to meet these requirements, simply branded someone an outcast. Hyde lacked these qualities: "Mr. Hyde was pale and dwarfish, he gave impression of deformity without any nameable malformation, he had borne himself to the lawyer with a sort of murderous mixture of timidity and boldness, and he spoke with a husky, whispering, and somewhat broken voice"" (124). Hyde's appearance was suspicious yet horrifying. Being associated with someone of these standards would only lower Jekyll's status in the society. Revealing that someone of this nature was his other half would only make him a man of whom everyone was scared. Many people want to label Hyde an outcast because of the horrific crimes he committed. As a result of this, citizens attempt to ruin his reputation for good. Enfield admits, "We told the man we could and would make such a scandal out of this, as it should make his name stink from one end of London to the other"" (114). The threats to unleash Hyde's crimes to the public only make it worse for the people who associate themselves with him; as most of them would always be branded outcasts. If people found out Jekyll was a part of Hyde, it would ruin his social status forever. In the 1800's, it was common for people to be unforgiving of criminals; they branded them until they were forgotten. These are two of Jekyll's biggest fears. Utterson reports, "Mr. Hyde had disappeared out of the ken of the police as though he had never existed"" (34). As society thinks, Mr. Hyde finally ran himself out of London to avoid the consequences. Many were joyous that Hyde fled, as they were acting as if he was unimportant and never existed.
