Unattainable Dreams in The Great Gatsby

Nick admires Gatsby's unique gift, as it differentiates him from the rest of the upper class. It was his ability to hope for the promises of life and romantic opportunities that might present themselves. But Nick adds a twist to his opinion. He claims, "No- Gatsby turned out alright at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men." The "No" followed with a dash serves the purpose of a reinforced pause, a pause more dramatic than a comma, to prepare the reader for the following statement. .
This quote highlights Gatsby's inability to accept that reality is what "preyed" on him. The phrase "foul dust" symbolizes Gatsby's American dream, which in Nick's opinion is doomed to fail. The word "dust" is often associated with floating or levitation, which is similar to how Daisy is described in the novel. The "wake," which is a trace left behind by an object floating in water, signifies Gatsby's belated realization of the "foul dust." Nick, who represents the upper class, shows ambivalent perceptions of Gatsby's qualities. He admires Gatsby's courage of pursuing his goal, yet scorns his actual goal, which is unattainable in Nick's perception. Gatsby seeks his fame and fortune solely for accomplishing his dream. All of his opulent estate and the sumptuous parties are insignificant to him; they are presented ostentatiously, in hopes of Daisy and the upper class's acknowledgment in return. .
Gatsby never enjoys his wealth the way other wealthy people do. Nick claims that "it was indirectly due to Cody that Gatsby drank so little.for himself he formed the habit of letting liquor alone." Gatsby doesn't drink because he has seen the negativity effects of alcohol through Cody's actions. Alcohol lowers one's inhibition and causes socially disgraceful actions.
