Sandra Cisneros' The House on Mango Street

The only way for these female figures in the novel to break away from the abusive males is to receive education and eventually make their own living so they can have the power the men possess.
The author names almost all men and all the women. Cisneros names the women in the story because they have no other personal identity other than their names. The men and their names are not as relevant as the names of the women in the story because the men on Mango Street all have the same traits, abusive and controlling. In other words, the actions of the men are more important than their individual names which generalizes the characteristics of men in the book. "The one who grabbed me by the arm, he wouldn't let me go" (Cisneros 100). In this chapter, an unnamed man violates Esperanza. Cisneros uses this man to represent how all men on Mango Street behave. The men do not consider the feelings of the women and are taking advantage of them. .
Cisneros creates a vile image of the men on Mango Street through these unnamed characters in the novella. Men believe that women are inferior to them and their place in society is to please them and take care of the household. "A woman's place is sleeping so she can wake up early with the tortilla star" (Cisneros 31). The author shows that the women on Mango Street are obligated to stay home and care for the children and household necessities, while the men work. This shows why education is so important for women to succeed because with an education they can go to a university and then get a job rather than taking care of the children. For example, Esperanza's mother who was a "smart cookie" (Cisneros 90-91) drops out of school to get married and take care of children. Clearly the author indicates that the females should acquire a high level of education to find success and escape the control of men.
This novella is dedicated "to the women" because it looks at the lives of women who are surviving with and without men in their lives.
