Children - The High Cost of American Poverty

In 2008, an 8 month old boy, Elijah Rodriguez, was beaten to death by his father while they were living in a homeless shelter in the Bronx. His death has been declared as "fatal child abuse syndrome."" Elijah's father, John Rodriguez, 21, was unemployed at the time of the beating death. His mother, Wanda Rosado, worked as a home health-aid, but she did not make enough money to fully support the family. John Rodriguez punched little Elijah in the stomach repeatedly, and he was pronounced dead shortly after. (Ref: NY Daily News).
On November 9, 1971, John List, a married father of three, murdered his wife, his mother, and his three children and then he vanished for close to 18 years. In 1971, John List, who had been working as an accountant, lost his job and hid his unemployment from his entire family by going and sitting at the bus station each day. John was over $11,000.00 behind on his mortgage and was stealing money from his mother's bank accounts. He murdered each member of his family by shooting them. After the murders, no one even noticed anything was wrong at the List house for almost a month. By the time the bodies of his family were found, John List was long gone. After close to 18 years, the story of the murders of the List family was broadcast on the television show, "America's Most Wanted," and John List was apprehended soon afterwards. He went to trial and was sentenced to five consecutive life sentences. He died in prison in 2008. (Ref: Star Ledger).
             Abortion.
It's a well known fact that abortion is a widely debated the subject. Many pregnant women find themselves living in a situation where they are single, and have no financial means to support themselves, much less a baby, abortion may seem to be the only way to "handle"" an unplanned pregnancy. They may find themselves alone and unsure of how to raise a baby alone. Or, they may be pressured by the father to have an abortion because he either doesn't want a baby, or cannot afford to raise one.
