Tom DeLonge's band "Angels and Airwaves," is more than just any old band. He describes it as "an art project that approaches larger human themes and tackles them in different mediums." He uses everyday human emotions to inspire the song lyrics he writes for this band. DeLonge takes large themes about humanity and creates lyrics about things everyone can relate to. His lyrics use these themes to make listeners think a little bit differently about themselves and the world around them.
The themes within the "Angels and Airwaves" albums all revolve around human consciousness. He takes emotions, such as love, anxiety, hope, and belief, and describes their meanings in ways much larger than we would normally describe them. Tom DeLonge uses his interpretation of these everyday emotions to inspire his lyrics. He also uses the sky and space to describe these emotions and other spiritual feelings. The band has four albums: "We Don't Need to Whisper," "I-Empire," "Love," and "Love: Part 2," each with a different emotional theme. "We Don't Need to Whisper" is about the examination and observation of one's self and changing the way everyone thinks about things. It's about finding a place in this world and trying to imagine the world differently.
"I-Empire" is more about going out into the world and actually grabbing it. Letting imagination soar, taking the world and sculpting it into whatever one would want it to be. This album focused on relationships, whereas the first album was about wars and conflict. The next two albums, "Love" and "Love: Part 2," focused on the human emotions and examination of relationships. It examines the relationships that everyone has with life, themselves, their friends, their loved ones, complete strangers, the universe, and God. Tom DeLonge in an interview also said, "It's a study in esoteric symbolism, which is basically a series of shapes that draw an energy out of a human being.
