At this point the lobster resembles a small lobster rather than a small shrimp.
5. Juvenile Lobster.
Once the lobsters have grown to about 15-25mm in length they start branching out of their hiding spots and hunt with less caution. It is a big achievement for the lobster to reach this stage since only 2 of every 50,000 larvae do.
6. Adult Lobster.
After 5-7 years and many molts (around 25) the juvenile lobster has finally grown into an adult lobster and are now about 60mm long. They develop reproductive organs and continue to grow in size by 1 molting once every year. A lobster can live for a very long time. The average lobster only lives for 15 years due to being caught by fishermen for food or by predators. Undisturbed however they can live for more than 50 years. 2"The largest lobster recorded was caught off the coast of Nova Scotia Scientists think it was at least 100 years old.".
Diet.
Larvae Diet.
The larvae are omnivores. Their diet consists of very small animals and plants such as water fleas, eggs, algae and diatoms.
Post Larvae Diet.
Now that the lobsters have moved down onto the bottom of the ocean their diet consists of gastropods, copepods, and fish eggs, and small shellfish.
Juvenile/Adult Lobster Diet.
At this point the lobster has become predators. They are opportunists. They will either hunt down other creatures at night or settle with already dead creatures. The typical juvenile/adult lobster eats crab, mussels, clams, sea urchins, and marine worms. They will drag back their prey to their shelters and use their sharp and powerful claws to rip them apart so that it can eat them.
Habitat.
American lobsters can be naturally found in the North Atlantic Ocean along the North American coast. The preferred depth that the lobsters like to live in is less than 50 meters under water although they can be found up to 400 meters deep. They live on the bottom of the ocean on rocky bottoms layered with algae with rocks and cracks to hide in/under from predators.
