A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway


            The exposition in the story "A Farewell to Arms," begins with the setting which describes a nasty war that is occurring. The war takes place in the mountains that sit back beyond the plains. The land where the war is happening is described by the author as bountiful with different crops growing in the summertime. As the seasons change in the beginning of the story, so does the weather that brings about the autumn and winter months. It is within these months that the narrator describes the cold rain, and the death that immerses with the onset of cholera across the land. .
             Hemingway's use of words during the exposition describe how the soldiers are strapped down with guns and ammo and how they look like they are six months pregnant. There are good visual images brought to life by Hemingway's unique choice of words. The exposition talks about the movement of the soldiers and the trucks along the dirt roads during the changing of the seasons. There are no main characters mentioned during the exposition. As the reader you only know of the person telling the story. The audience does not know who the narrator is. The narrator turns out to be Frederic Henry who tells the story in the past tense as if he is recalling his memories. As the story continues on, Rinaldi tells Frederic that he loves this nurse and he wants to introduce her to him. Frederic is smitten with Catherine from the beginning. He likes the idea of falling in love with someone. Frederic and Catherine begin playing this love game with one another. .
             The rising action continues with Mr. Henry and Catherine continuing to find small amounts of given time to spend with one another. In the rising action, Frederic is hurt, while he is in the trenches. The men haul him to the hospital in Milan, where he is reunited with Catherine at the American hospital. he narrator lets the reader/audience know as he arrives at the hospital that his name is actually Frederic Henry.
