For hundreds of years, the city of Rome and its inhabitants fought with their neighbors and expanded their territory until they established a vast empire. As the Roman territories grew, their conquests continued to fuel further conquests. Rome was one of the largest empires to be in control for almost a thousand years. Controlling a lot of land was hard to do. This empire lasted from 31 B.C. to 476 A.D. An empire this big was bound to fall apart. After all of the years it was an empire, Rome started to decline. This empire was to large to govern effectively. There were multiple causes to the fall of Rome. One of the major events that occurred was when the Goths, Huns, and Visigoths invaded Rome. .
The Goths were another group that invaded Rome. They originated from Scandinavia and took over much of Rome. Tome B. Jones stated, "At the beginning of the Christian era the Goths lived on the south shore of the Baltic just east of the Vistula River. Subsequently they moved southward to the Black Sea area where in the 3d century they held territory stretching from the mouth of the Danube to the Dnieper. Then they launched a series of raids into the Roman provinces of Dacia and Moesia." As time went on attacts became more violent. The Goths killed Decius. After a while, their relationship with the Roamsn impoved until the attact of the Huns. The Goths did not want to destroy the Roman Empire. They just wasnted to adapt to the Roman land. Tom B. Jones stated, "They actually protected the civilized world against the barbarism of the Huns and others and prevented its immediate collapse." The Visigoths settled in the lower Moesia. They were not that smart and created a refugee problem. They became so resntfull of their treatment and war ensured. Theodosios delt with them firmlu and honestly. They were givin land only if they had an alliance with Rome and was in the military. .
