Pledging is more of an open ritual that isn't as secretive as the handshakes or passwords. The process works by potential new members being introduced to the certain sorority during the pledging ceremony and they are given a special pin to wear during the new member period. The potential new members then go on to learn more about the symbolism of the organization before being prepared to learn fully about everything the sorority entails before initiation. Last but not least, the motto is then told to the potential new member. .
The initiation ritual is conducted formally. Every chapter of the sorority conducts the same kind of initiation ritual in order to stay consistent with previous initiation traditions. The initiation ritual is a vital part to the sorority process because it unites all women no matter the time or location. During initiation the new member learns the secret motto, handshake, passwords, songs, crest/shield, and any other important information needed for membership. Each new member is then asked to take an oath, repeat a vow, and then commit to the sororities' ideologies and customs. .
Secret handshakes, passwords, and songs are all traditions that each sorority at Spring Hill College embraces. These handshakes, passwords, and songs were originated by the founding members of each sorority then passed down as time has gone on. After speaking with several sorority members around campus I realized that they would not tell me what their handshakes and passwords were. They did however say that handshakes and passwords are used before chapter and at other times to tell a sorority member from a non sorority member. Pins and badges have also become increasingly popular. There are certain days out of the week that are called "pin day" where members of the sorority have to sport their pins around in tribute to the sorority they are affiliated with. All the values and core beliefs are based on a predisposed ideology between the founding members of the sororities that have been passed down from generation to generation of sorority sisters.
