Poetry - Romantic, Sexual, and Religious Love

He asks God to give up his free will or identity so that he may become loved by God. He wants God to overwhelm him so that he may never be free again. Again, the narrator gives up his body to God, but he also gives up his free will to God because he wants to acquire religious love. .
Like in Sir John Suckling's poem entitled "Song," a person is giving up a piece of himself in order to attain romantic life. In the poem, a man is making fun of his friend because of the fact that he is in love with a woman. This is demonstrated when he says:.
Will, when looking well can't move her,.
             Looking ill prevail?.
Prithee, why so pale? (Suckling 3-5).
At this point in the poem, the lover's friend is making fun of the lover because of the way he looks. He is looking sick and pale in the face due to the fact that the woman he loves does not love him. The man's friend tells the lover that he couldn't get the one he loves when he was looking his best, so he will not be able to win her love when he is looking his worst. The man is so upset that this woman does not love him, that he is sacrificing his appearance. He does not want to take care of himself. All the lover wants is for the one he loves to love him and be romantic with him. Again, we see the lover sacrificing himself when his friend brings up the fact that he has not been speaking. .
The friend states, "Will, when speaking well can't win her. Saying nothing do't?" (Suckling 8-9). At this instance in the poem, the lover's friend is criticizing his friend for not talking due to his lover. He says that she did not want him when he was speaking well and on top of his game, so why would she love him now when he is not speaking. The reader understands that the lover has now sacrificed his personality and he cannot be himself unless he obtains the romantic love of this certain woman. In this poem, a lover has sacrificed his persona, happiness with life, and his appearance in order to acquire romantic love.
