In 1952, Malayan General Election in Kuala Lumpur, the leaders of Selangor UMNO and the Kuala Lumpur MCA decided to work together and form a multiracial political party. The UMNO-MCA alliance won nine out of twelve seats contested in the election. The alliance was then expanded through participation in the local election of several other main towns. The success of this partnership reflected the efforts to establish cooperation between the races for mutual interests. .
The multi-ethic coalition party led to a larger alliance at the central level. Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj and Tan Cheng Lock formed the Alliance Party in 1955 and MIC joined sometimes later. The partnership that formed showed the cooperation between three main ethic groups in the Malay Peninsula. In the 1955 Malayan General Elections the people support for Alliance Party was apparent. Alliance party won51 out of 52 seats that was contested. This victory also led to fresh negotiations for independence for the Federal States of Malaya.
Independence of Malaya Party (IMP).

Dato'Onn Jaafar left the party to form the Independence of Malaya Party (IMP). The formation of the IMP was to realize Dato'Onn's idea that the cooperation between races could form the basis for the creation of a single party. The membership was open to all races with the objective of obtaining independence in 10 years, but his idea was not well received. Others than the aforementioned parties, Islamic political parties also formed to form an Islamic country.
In 1955, the victory of The Alliance Party's victory in the General Elections paved the way to self-government. Tunku Abdul Rahman had led an entourage to London to negotiate for the independence. This entourage comprised four Sultan and four representatives of the Alliance Party. After the negotiations, The London Agreement was signed on 8 February 1956 and the agreement state that the Federated States of Malaya was given independence on 31 August 1957.
