             The majority of research and development in the bedding industry has historically been done by the mattress manufacturers, but over the past decade the government has increased its funding in the industry. Government funded research focuses mainly on sleep disorders and the affect that a good night's sleep can have on the overall health of a person. Privately-funded research also examines the effects of getting ample sleep, but mainly focuses on research into the technology and product innovations required to get the right amount of sleep. This research has led to an increasing rate of product innovation in the bedding industry.
             As with all industries in today's society, product innovation is moving at an ever-increasing rate. The latest product innovation that changed the landscape of the mattress industry is the development of the memory foam mattress. The memory foam technology was developed by NASA in the late 1960s and was introduced in the mattress industry in 1991 by Tempur-Pedic. Since then, the memory foam mattress has become the best-selling product in the market. One downside to the memory foam technology is its heat-retaining properties. This heat-retaining attribute has led to the latest development in the bedding industry, the gel-infused memory foam mattress. Gel-infused mattresses consist of gel particles infused with visco foam which reduces trapped body hear and makes the mattress feel softer. The gel-infused mattress was introduced in 2006, but did not become popular until 2011 when Serta introduced their iComfort line. .
