Dolce & Gabbana - Advertising


The usage of the counterculture idea is apparent in Dolce & Gabbana advertisements, as Thomas Frank states in his essay, "Commodify Your Dissent," "Consumerism is no longer about conformity but about difference" (165). According to the Dolce and Gabbana Website their mission statement is: D&G, Dolce & Gabbana is the metropolitan glamour: an eclectic and contemporary brand, the expression of a changing world. It is a style without borders, which freely interprets the various influences of its own era, to become a unique and instantly recognizable lifestyle (D&G).
             Looking even further into the Dolce and Gabbana advertisement I analyzed it is apparent that this brand thrives on counterculture idea. A satin cheetah print drape is the backdrop, with a seductively poised woman who happens to have captured the persona of Marilyn Monroe. The woman to imitate Marilyn is Scarlett Johansson, an American actress and model. The model has a flawless face along with a "come hither" seductive gleam in her eyes, with her finger placed right near her lip while the other hand is placed over her hair, in a nonchalant style. The most captivating and decisive part of the ad are the model's red full lips. Her mouth is slightly ajar with her lips poised in a very sexy and a provocative manner. To further accentuate her full red lips, the model is also wearing matching nail polish to exaggerate the color. Her blond curls are teased and exactly imitate Marilyn's classic hairstyle. The model is lying on her side with her body frame facing the camera, her upper thigh and arms highlighted with this pearly glow to even further accentuate her milky white skin. In the left side corner there is an open lipstick extended the whole way with text reading, Scarlett Johansson wears "THE LIPSTICK" creamy texture for "lustful lips." Dolce & Gabbana is placed along the bottom of the page in an opaque white text.
