They have had a greater influence on the analysis of the family than any other theoretical approach and is therefore of great relevance, (Haralambous & Holbourn, 2004). In general, the Feminists have looked to analyze the impact of family life on women, (Giddens, 2001). Despite differences in their approach and main concern, different Feminists agree women occupy a lesser role in the family and are exploited in several ways and the family is neither beneficial or essential, (Taylor et al, 1995). Marxist Feminists consider capitalism to be the main exploiter whereas Radical Feminists consider patriarchy as the main exploiter within families, (Haralambous & Holbourn, 2004). George Murdock (1949 in Haralambous & Holbourn) carried out a study involving 250 families from different cultures and societies, (Haralambous & Holbourn, 2004). From his analysis he has argued that the family "performs four basic functions for the individual members and society at large. He has referred to these as the sexual, reproductive, economic and educational functions" (Selfe, 1993). .
The sexual function refers to the regulation of sexual activity. Husbands and wives have unlimited sexual access to each other, and in all societies, there are norms concerning sexual activity outside of marriage. Therefore, Murdock argues that the family caters to the sexual needs of its adult members and also limits sexual access to other member of the society, (Giddens, 2001). This means that by providing sexual gratification for both men and women enables both parents to remain emotionally attached thus maintaining stability, (Cuff et al, 1998). Radical Feminists however see this as a negative aspects arguing that the family controls a woman's freedom of sexual activity and is merely an unpaid chore she is expected to provide for her husband, (Selfe, 1993).
The reproductive function relates to bearing and raising children.
