Characters in the Works of Edgar Allan Poe


Every one of his protagonists possesses different characteristics from normal people. .
             The protagonists have different mentalities of taking action whom they are upset. Writing in the perspective of psychological description Junfeng and Haiyuan said, "Psychological description is mining figures inside the subconscious and characterizing people's inner feelings and mental activity. It can make the character's image more distinct and accurate to reproduce. Psychological characterizations, as an essential writing technique, occupy an increasingly important place in the fiction writing" (Junfeng and Haiyuan 326). Psychological characterizations of the characters are always needed as it helps the readers to understand the mentality of the characters and without understanding the characters it is difficult to understand the story. Poe always describes his characters psychology through their activities and mental feelings. In "The Tell-Tale Heart," the" protagonist expresses his psychology though his mental feelings "It is impossible to tell how first the idea entered my brain; but once conceived, it haunted me day and night. I loved the old man. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye! Yes, it was this!"" (Poe 1).3 Here, the protagonist is expressing his fear for the old man's eyes and it led him into kill the old man. Normally people commit murder out of greed for money or treasures but here he has different issue "blue eyes. .
             Poe's writing pattern is totally different from other writers. His vocabulary forces the readers to pay full attention on his characters. If we think about the stories "The Tell-Tale Heart " and "The Cask of Amontillados " the vocabulary he has use there is so strange that it keeps the reader's attention on the protagonist what keeps us wondering and guessing what she or he is going to do next. His vocabulary keeps the readers busy as it describes the psychology of the characters through their acts.
