Their self esteem lowers and may lead to depression. Aside from depression, they are sub-conscientiously placing their education at risk. According to a 2010 psychological study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 94% of adolescents had a decrease of intelligence after being bullied. This was due to their focus and attention. These adolescents have become self-conscious of their appearances and the degrading remarks from the bullies that their education no longer takes priority. Moreover, within the same study, it shows that 14% of the 94% of victims have given up on education and have become a high school or middle school dropout. The victims are the only ones who end up suffering. .
Aside from the threats of the safety and the mental state of mind of the students, the bullies are not getting a justified consequence for their actions. According to the United States of America Department of Education, there is a no bullying tolerance in ALL schools across the nation. The suspension time period for bullying is a minimum of one day to a maximum of three weeks. According to the National Education Association, 55% of all public schools suspend students for no more than a week for bullying others. 45% of that 55% only suspend bullies for a day. 10% of all public schools neglect to suspend students for bullying. 77% of all victims of bullying have spoken out and claimed that despite how many times a student has been convicted of bullying, they continued to receive the same punishment over and over again. It is unjustified that time after time, bullies are taking away lives, education, safety, and mentality from students and the consequences do not vary or alter. In addition to it being blatantly unjustified, it is an example of inequality. Students should be rewarded in equivalence to their achievements, thus reversing the theory that students should as well be punished in equivalence to their wrongdoings.
