E-Coli Poisoning in Children

E-Coli poisoning is a very serious matter; it can cause serious illness and even death. It may seem like the United States doesn't do enough to prevent this, but you can argue both sides of the argument. E-Coli 0157H7 has been on the rise the last fifteen years. This poisoning is caused by bacteria that can spread from human to human contact but most commonly found in tainted meat. E-coli poisoning is much more severe in children and can lead to death in some cases. The E-Coli bacteria can stay in a child's feces for more than three weeks, which is much longer than an adult. USDA officials have a chance to heavily monitor companies producing meat but find it is much too difficult to monitor everyone. So some bacteria slips by and into the food we consume. (Child Health Alert).
In 2001, a noted controversy surrounding the E-Coli health issue took place in the state of Colorado. Kevin Kowalczyk was a happy four year old until the summer when his family took a camping trip. Kevin's family consumed tainted hamburgers while on their vacation. Kevin became very ill. Kevin began to vomit and his diarrhea had blood in it. Kevin's family rushed him to the hospital. Kevin was found to have E-Coli 0157H7. Kevin couldn't eat or drink anything while in the hospital. A few days later Kevin's kidneys failed and he died shortly after. The Hospital contacted the USDA to inform them of this incident and nothing was done. Finally the meat was recalled 3 weeks after Kevin had died. This is a very tragic story that shows how deadly tainted meat can be. Kevin's mother tried to protest, she wanted the USDA to test for E-Coli and shut down the companies that continued to fail. The companies won the battle and did not have test for E-Coli. It is scary to think that the USDA will not test all there meat. (Food Inc.).
There are many more incidents of E-Coli poisoning in children throughout the United States.
