Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among men and women in the United States. About 600,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year ("Heart Disease Facts", 2013). Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, killing more than 385,000 people annually ("Heart Disease Facts",2013). A huge amount of Americans, 715,000, have heart attacks in every year ("Heart Disease Facts, 2013).              Public Health Problem.
High blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, and smoking are all key factors that lead to heart disease, and about half of the population in America have at least one of the three risk factors ("Heart Disease Facts", 2013). Since this disease is so common in the United States, the risks for the community in the future only seems negative. People may not be able to take care of themselves, due to their difficulty of performing daily tasks, such as walking or bathing ("Healthy Communities",2013). In addition, the sudden death of an individual from a heart attack could also mean the loss of a source of primary income that's crucial to a low income family. This creates a negative impact on the individual's children and the living standard of the whole entire family.
How to Solve the Public Health Problem.
Since the disease is so common, it is important to pay close attention to the risk factors that lead up to the disease. Some etiological risk factors include obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol use, and diabetes ("Heart Disease Facts",2013). In fact, cardiovascular mortality was actually about as great for diabetic women as for diabetic men (Kannel, McGee, 1979). It is saddening to hear that the death rate of this disease is so high especially when we know that it is highly preventable.
