Aboriginals - After the Confederation

Instead of these treaties being fair and benefiting both sides they were mostly only beneficial to the British, leaving the aboriginals damaged. The terms of the treaties say that the Natives would have to surrender and give up their land to the British in order to receive 3-12$ when signing the document as well as 3-5$ a year, reserve land to live on, establishing schools on reserve land, clothing each year for the chiefs as well as a medal and flag, and basic agricultural equipment and supplies. In order to receive these benefits the Natives also had to make a promise that they would remain peaceful towards the new immigrants and follow the Canadian laws. By signing these treaties the Natives had agreed to live on reserves not fully understanding how badly they would turn out to be for their people. .
The Government created reserves because they wanted to keep the Aboriginals away from the English people. The English thought that Natives were barbaric and did not agree with the way they lived so they wanted them to stay far away in order for the English to not have to live around or be affected by them. The other reason was that they hoped the Natives would become more civilized people and act the same way the English did and to eventually create a 100% "white society". The reserves had farm equipment in hopes of teaching them how to farm therefore helping to create a European way of life. In the end the aboriginals realized what the treaties actually did. which was damage their entire civilization while only bettering the British. As more and more treaties were created the Natives started to understand them a lot better and stood up for themselves by making sure to negotiate better terms that would actually benefit their people. .
The treaty negotiations were hardly ever fair and in many ways the Government took advantage of the First nations because both sides were never 100% clear about what it is that the treaties meant.
