Overview of Standards for Teachers

Discuss this with your mentor.
From observation B.Z.K has become very introvert since her first few days at the school. She rarely contributes to whole class discussions and does not talk unless prompted. B.Z.K has a good level and understanding of spoken English but has a noticeable accent. Class teacher has concerns regarding other pupils teasing B.Z.K about her accent relating to her sudden reluctance to speak. I have observed B.Z.K in a smaller group setting and witnessed that she is much more forthcoming in this group (app 12 students), she raises her hand and is more confident. I have discussed this with mentor .
Using Appendix B descriptors my estimate of childs stage of English development are as follows-.
             Extended scale for listening.
             Level 1 (secure) .
In familiar contexts she can follow what others say about what they are doing and thinking (During a lesson she was able to respond to class teachers question when asked accurately).
She listens with understanding to sequences of instructions and usually responds appropriately in conversation. (From speaking to her she understands what the task is about and has understood the teachers instructions).
             Extended scale for speaking.
             Level 1 (threshold).
R.Z.K speaks about matters of immediate interest in a familiar setting. She can slowly convey meaning through talk and gesture and can extend what she says with support, she often needs prompting to express her answers correctly, however she generally has the right idea. She is more confident in speaking in smaller groups surrounded by pupils who she has a closer relationship with, in certain groups R.Z.K almost becomes selectively mute or withdrawn. She responds well with one to one conversations and has no problems particularly enjoys talking to teachers and other UEL students working in her year group.
             Extended scale for reading.
             Level 1 (threshold).
R.Z.K meets some of the criteria for Level 1(secure) however due to the level of support she requires I would place her on the threshold stage.
