The Feral Cats of Hawaii

We must take further responsibility in order to ensure their survival. According to a research conducted by the University of Hawaii at Manoa, it states that feral animals are the main influence and factor to their decline in population and even to extinction (Atkinson). The spread of disease and foreign substance is greatly causing a negative impact on our environment. The article then takes about the damage from feral pigs that eat the roots of native plants and the after effects of mud and mosquito populations which are directly linked to disruption of the ecosystem causing the problem to "snowball". Mosquitos are known to spread diseases and ultimately ignoring this problem will cause it to affect our own health. .
My proposal in preventing and reducing the amount of damage these animals are causing can be initiated by government subsidized incentive for the public to help participating in the island wide effort. This solution I propose will not be a short term immediate fix, but rather a long, slow, and steady process that we as a community and ohana can work together to achieve. By rewarding citizens using a cash reward to bring in feral cats to animal shelters to have them tagged and spayed or neutered will cause many to make the initial effort to solve this problem. I believe time is money and if we reward the people who take time out of their own busy schedule to participate in preventing feral animals then they should be rewarded, if not be reimbursed. If we also introduce an incentive based law that allows people to get involved I strongly feel that people of Hawaii will listen to effectively handle the current situation. The Hawaiian Humane Society has already lowered costs for the their solution to the feral cat problem which was the Trap, Neuter, and Release program (Hawaiian Humane Society). The feral cat problem is already something that has been offered a bandage type of solution.
