The status of a person can even be seen in their speech as they have different ways and terms when approaching a superior, equal, and inferior. The Bugis are religiously minded; most of the country practices Sunni Islam, although Muslim is becoming more prevalent since the country was introduced to it in the 15th century. The teachings of Sunni Islam is a little different because the hold on to pre-Islamic teachings; such as healings, ancestor rituals, sprits, and things of this nature.
The Trobrianders were discovered in the 1970s, and named by a French explorer named D Entrecasteaux after Denise de Trobriand as the first lieutenant (Weiner 1988). The tribe developed in what we call Papua New Guinea today was once divided. The southern part was called Territory of Papua and the northern part was called Territory of New Guinea. The two territories later combined with a natural flag and later proclaimed independence. The Trobrianders have not just been confined to the Kiriwana Island therefore many people have been dispersed in the surrounding islands Kitia, Kakuta, and Kailera Islands. The geographic division has led to wide range of dialects in different regions. The Trobrianders did not advance in technology instead they used more primitive ways to make a living, like fishing and farming. .
Marriage is a constitution that is highly held in culture because it protects the familial linage. How people are married and to who happens to be different in the two cultures, however they both hold marriages in a high respect. In order to keep the linage going couples must make children, so marriage is an important institution that continues kinship. The Bugis believes in quick marriages and marry off children young. Many times they want to have marriage partners that are first, second, or third cousins in them degrees. They do not take is as far as marrying a sibling, grandchild, or a child of sibling that would be considered as taboo (Gall&Hobby; 2009).
