The History of Harley Davidson


Retro motorcycles offer a "blast from the past " and are among Harley's best-selling models. .
             By the mid 1900's, Harley-Davidson motorcycles are being used for police work, and soon, a new use will become an important part of the history of both Harley-Davidson and the United States- Harley-Davidson motorcycles on the battlefield. They were used in the early 1900's in border skirmishes with Pancho Villa, and would soon be used to support the infantry in World War I. By the time the war is over, there had been an estimated twenty thousand Harley-Davidson's put into action.
             During the Great Depression, all motorcycle manufacturers except for Harley-Davidson and Indian were devastated. By 1941, Harley-Davidson was asked to build and ship more than ninety thousand motorcycles for use during World War II. Harley-Davidson earned the coveted Army-Navy 'E'" Award for excellence in wartime production. By 1953, Indian had closed its doors, making Harley-Davidson the sole survivor in the American Motorcycle Industry. Although Indian would be resurrected and fail several more times in the years to come, Harley-Davidson would remain number one. Today, Harley-Davidson produces over 51 percent of heavy cruisers worldwide.
             The end of World War II brought about a new chapter in the motorcycle world as men who had been fighting over seas, come home and gave birth to bike clubs". Although widely referred to as "biker gangs", bike clubs were originally formed by soldiers who, after spending years away from home camaraderie fighting in wars, most notably World War II, found it hard to fit back into society. Seeking the of fellow soldiers who could relate to the experiences of fighting in war, made motorcycles seem like the perfect vehicle.
             The Hells Angels Motorcycle Cub, perhaps the most infamous of motorcycle clubs, was formed by a vet named Otto Friedli of the Flying Tigers of WWII, in Fontana, California, in 1948.
