The Oklahoma State University's football team has a true underdog to victory story. Yet, over the last decade, it's been alleged that to have achieved great success, the team management, as well as the players, have done so by purposefully ignoring the fundamental rules of college sports. In a ten month investigation conducted by a very well-regarded magazine found allegations that includes coaches paying players, sex with recruiting hostesses, players dealing drugs, and an academic adviser hired without any previous experience. .
The allegation of players being paid by boosters for their performance for that game or being a better player than the others was happening all the time. Bonuses were delivered in a variety of ways, multiple players said. Sometimes players got extra money in their pre-game envelopes, which were usually handed out by low-level football staff members. On other occasions an envelope with money was waiting for them in their locker the day after a game. Former players said that if a player found a new pair of socks in his locker postgame, there was a good chance some cash was inside one of them. Depending on how prominent a player was they would receive money out of control, clear as day. There were many examples of different players being paid for their play. Calvin Mickens, former Oklahoma State cornerback, says his first payment came after a win over Montana State. He performed well having a forced fumble, broke up a pass and had two tackles. After the game, while getting undressed a man he had never seen before walked up to him and gave him two hundred dollars. Later on in his career the money became more prevalent and received cash from a different game as an amount of eight hundred dollars. .
When thinking about these allegations with money, is it ethical? Is it ethical for players to get paid for their performance? Is it ethical for only specific players to receive cash from boosters and other people? This refers to the ethical responsibility of doing what is right no matter what the cost is, literally.
