Military Bearing - The US Army Field Manual

Conversely to giving superiors a bad first impression, the same could be said for subordinates. If a leader routinely arrives at formation in the incorrect uniform, without a haircut and/or exceeds the height and weight standards, then his/her subordinates will not show any respect for them. Displaying a proper military and professional appearance sends a clear signal: being proud of the uniform and of the United States of America. This will also show that U.S. military soldiers have discipline: discipline enough to remain calm and rational under the stresses and pressures of combat. .
While displaying the proper military and professional appearance is a good foundation, all military members must adhere to the proper customs and courtesies. Proper courtesies can be classified as such: saluting all Officers within (at least) 6 paces; standing at the position of Parade Rest when addressing Non-commissioned Officers of higher rank; standing at the position of Attention when addressing Officers higher in rank; giving the greeting of the day to senior enlisted members and Officers; and referring to all Non-commissioned Officers and Officers with their respective proper titles. Army Regulation (or AR) 600-20 states, "Courtesy among members of the Armed Forces is vital to maintain military discipline. Respect to seniors will be extended at all times. " By rendering the proper courtesies and keeping a military and professional appearance, generally speaking, one will give a positive first impression. Having that positive first impression can also aid in overcoming difficult situations such as surprise visits from high level commanders as well as board appearances. .
Additionally, whoever is given this select impression is also given a lasting impression and will remember these soldiers as having proper military bearing. In order to maintain a positive and lasting impression, one of the things needed is tact.
