The role of philosophy in regards to religion contains a lot of grey areas.

Justin Martyr was a second century Christian writer who came to the faith through his study of philosophy. Justin Martyr's defense of philosophy in religion is somewhat implicit, in that he uses it in order to defend Christianity. He makes no overt claim that philosophy should be applied to Christianity, but does so through implication and through his appeals to reason and classical thought. Justin charges, in his First Apology, that the pagan and Greco-Roman gods are in fact demons who have designs to distract man from truth and reason. Justin also makes mention of Socrates' importance, in saying that he was one who sought to utilize reason and truth, and the charges of atheism against Socrates resulting in his death were in fact the demonic gods reacting to a man who might have awoken people to reason and lessened their sway on the world. For Justin, the Greek logos is key to understanding Christianity and the rationale behind it.".
Logos in Greek words means "word, wisdom, truth or reason." He goes so far as to assert that "we desire to be believed not because we deliver many the same things with them, but because we deliver the truth, and nothing but the truth, and that Jesus alone is properly the Son of God, as being the logos", and first begotten, and power of God, and by His counsel was made man, and taught these doctrines for the conversion and restoration of mankind.
