For instance, same-sex marriage, a highly controvertible topic, has a larger group of supporters within the millennial and generation-x age groups when compared to the views of baby boomers and veterans (Desmond, 2012). Younger families are putting off starting a family until later in life, in order to pursue their education, build a stronger career base and establish a secure home life before child rearing takes place. .
Finally, I believe age affects abortion position because abortion is a procedure only performed on specific age groups (those within childbearing age). The younger generation will be more pro-choice because they tend to believe women should have the right to decide for themselves whether or not abortion is an option. Older generations are not within the age group of those typically seeking abortion, and thus would not be faced with the personal dilemma of abortion versus adoption, or deciding to continue the pregnancy and raise the child themselves. It is easy for the older generation to say, "Abortion is wrong, when there is no direct impact on their lifestyle and financial state." .
In regards to political ideology and view on abortion, I hypothesize that as the political affiliation leans more to the right, the abortion view becomes more pro-life. I have stated a few interpretations as to why I believe this hypothesis.
As stated above in the previous hypothesis argument, those with a conservative view tend to be more anti-abortion than those with a more liberal view. Republicans typically are more conservative with controversial issues such as gay marriage, abortion, and stem cell research. Currently, the highly public figures of the Republican party have strong anti-abortion views with the only variation being whether or not they protest all abortions, or believe it should only be legalized for instances of rape and incest, or for cases of jeopardized maternal health.
