Twenty-eight students registered for my Beacon session. I meet my students twice a week to explain the chemistry lessons and help them study. I have been in the Beacon Program for three months, and I love the job. This experience not only challenges and develops my leadership but also gives me a chance to review and consolidate my general chemistry knowledge. It also helps me expand my communication skills as well as my public speaking skills. I have to make a handout for my students every week, which helps me improve my preparation and organization skills. These skills are very important and necessary for a scientist. .
Last summer, I did personal-interest research about the role of chemistry in society as well as the jobs that chemistry provides to the society. The result of the research amazed me and made me love chemistry even more. Chemistry occupies a very special position in science and in society. It not only discovers new phenomenon and compounds but also creates and synthesizes new compounds and material. Chemistry stretches its borders further by coming in contacts with other sciences and gradually becoming the central science. Besides, chemistry provides many important positions in many fields, such as agricultural science, biochemistry, chemical synthesis, environmental chemistry, the food industry, pharmaceutical research, etc. The research reinforced my decision to become a chemist. I want to specialize in organic chemistry and theoretical chemistry. I also want to develop new medicines to help patients recover from their sickness quickly; therefore, pharmaceutical research is also a consideration. My future goal is to obtain a Ph.D. in chemistry.
Potential to Contribute.
I think one of the best contributions that I will bring to the University of California is my enthusiasm. I have a strong passion about science, especially chemistry, and I am always eager to study new things.
