The RTP is managed by the Research Triangle Foundation (RTF) of North Carolina. Founded in 1959, the RTF's mission is to provide opportunities for North Carolinians by connecting the region's knowledge assets to create economic opportunity. Since it was established, the RTP has witnessed a steady and stable increase in the number of companies and employees. The first official company in the Park was the Research Triangle Institute (RTI, today Known as RTI International), established by the same leaders who created RTP as a focal point of the power and potential of the research emanating from the region's three research universities. In October 1959, the RTI purchased a hundred acres of land in the RTP and quickly began construction of its new facility. Coupled with the founding of the Chemstrahd campus in 1960, RTP began its transformation into a global center for scientific research and enterprise. .
Today, there are more than 170 global companies in RTP, including IBM, GSK, Syngenta, Credit Suisse, and Cisco, that foster a culture of scientific advancement and competitive excellence. More than 39,000 full-time equivalent employees work in the RTP with an estimated 10,000 contract workers.
Throughout the course of the RTP's development of more than 50 years, there are three main experiences of success for the SETDZs in China to learn. .
Firstly, the RTP is owned and managed by the Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina. The RTF is a non-profit organization (NPO). The RTF works to attract quality jobs, foster collaboration with universities and sustain the RTP as a continued engine for the region and state's economic growth. In 50 years, the RTP has become one of the largest-scale examples of how public and private partnership can have a lasting impact on job creation and long-term economic competitiveness. Just because the RTF is a NPO, this makes the RTP have a long-term planning and implement it wholly according to it.
