The Fast Food Takeover

More than one third of Americans are obese, and by taking a close look at the nutritional values listed on fast food restaurant menus, we can begin to see why. Joanna Weiss, a reporter and columnist for the Boston Glove, denounces in "Happy meals and Old Spice Guy" that the strategies of the advertising and marketing campaigns of McDonald's and Proctor and Gamble have a major effect on the buying habits of consumers (207). Therefore, it's very important to analyze the obesity issue America in relation to the economic and political implications of this health issue. .
A contributing factor to the obesity epidemic is an overall lack of information on what fast foods will do to our bodies along with a lack of reinforced regulations on the campaign and marketing strategies of fast food companies. .
There are many behaviors that people can adopt in order to change their eating habits. People are obese mostly because of when, how and what they eat. Obesity is not only the reason why the youth generation of today are expected to live less than their parents, but also is the one of the main reason why people have cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes. Fast food giants like McDonald's and Burger King have got to be the primary reason why people have so many bad eating habits. They are usually open 24/7, they are easily accessible with their drive-thru services, the food is usually ready in a minute and they are essentially located at every corner of the streets. With a fast-paced country like the United States, where everyone is usually busy and no one really has time to cook a good meal at home, it is very difficult to reduce the obesity rate. And how about when one have to choose between a $ 15 healthy meal at a casual restaurant and a $1.00 McChicken at McDonald's? The choice is pretty simple and an editorial article in New York reveals that "When consumers need to cut spending, the logic goes, cheap meals like Big Macs and Whoppers become even more attractive".
