My Philosophy of Nursing


            Through the influence of Florence Nightingale, the most famous nurse in history, the field of nursing became viewed as more than just a "job". My philosophy is that in order for a nurse to effectively care for a patient, she/he must exhibit certain attributes: commitment, trust, knowledge and taking hold of responsibility. .

             The Decision to Be a Nurse.
             After a long and stressful shift, I sometimes ask myself, "Why did I become a nurse"? After all, nursing wasn't my first career choice. After leaving the military, I went to nursing school on the advice of a career counselor. During my clinical rotations I observed how nurses on the unit interacted with their patents and I was impressed with the caring and empathetic attitudes of the nurses. By observing these nurses, I decided that nursing was my true calling, and it was the perfect way for me to make a financial living while making a difference in lives of others.
             Nursing can be stressful and very demanding. A nurse must have the ability to show compassion, patience, love and support and maintain those attributes consistently. A nurses job extends beyond medical care - a good nurse also cares about the emotional well-being of her patients. .
             The Essence of Nursing.
             I believe the core of nursing is caring, trust and compassion. Without caring and .
             compassion you could affect the outcome of the patients healing process. Caring could be .
             something as simple listening to your patients or just holding their hand because nothing .
             else can be done. It will re-assure the patient that you truly care. Carative factors specify the .
             meaning of the relationship of nurse and patient as human beings (Watson, 1979). .
             In order to develop a trusting relationship the nurse must show care for the patient. Without a .
